Refund policy
Last updated: 10 October 2026
Finished knives can be returned within 14 days of delivery. Knives made to your own specifications cannot, but every knife is covered if it is faulty.
MK-Knives sells two kinds of knives, and the rules differ:
| Finished knives | Custom commissions | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A knife I made and offer as it is, in a drop or in the shop | A knife made to your choices of size, profile, steel, grind, handle or engraving |
| 14-day right of withdrawal | Yes | No, once work has started |
| Faulty or not as agreed | Covered for 2 years | Covered for 2 years |
A knife is not a custom commission just because it is handmade and one of a kind. It is a commission when it is made to your specifications.
1. Returning a finished knife (14-day right of withdrawal)
You can change your mind about a finished knife within 14 days of receiving it, without giving a reason. This applies to customers in every country I ship to.
- Tell me within 14 days. Email info@mk-knives.com with your order number and that you wish to return the knife. You can use the withdrawal form at the bottom of this page, but a plain email is enough.
- Send the knife back within 14 days after you have told me. Please wait for my reply with the return address and packing advice before you ship.
- I refund you within 14 days of receiving your message. I may wait to pay until the knife has arrived back, or until you have sent proof that it is on its way.
The 14 days run from the day you, or someone you named, receive the knife.
2. Condition of a returned knife
A returned knife must come back as you received it, with the handmade leather sheath and everything else that was included.
You may look at the knife, hold it and check its balance, as you could in a shop. If you intend to return it, please do not cut with it, sharpen, strop, polish or alter it. If the knife has been used beyond what is needed to inspect it, I may reduce the refund by the loss in value.
Pack the knife so the edge is covered and cannot cut through the box, ideally in the original packaging.
3. Custom commissions
A knife made to your specifications has no right of withdrawal once I have started making it, because it is made for you alone.
Every commission starts with a written quote. It lists the specifications, the price, the deposit and the estimated completion time. By paying the deposit, you confirm that the knife is made to your specifications.
Deposit
- Cancel before I have started work or bought materials for your knife: the deposit is refunded in full.
- Cancel after work has started: the deposit is not refunded, as it covers the materials and work already done for you.
- The remaining amount is due when the knife is finished, before it is shipped.
Changes to the design are welcome while they are still possible. If a change affects the price or completion time, I will confirm it with you before I continue.
A custom knife is covered for faults and for not matching what we agreed, exactly like a finished knife (section 5).
4. Return shipping and refunds
When you change your mind, you pay for sending the knife back; I refund the knife and the original standard shipping.
Return shipping
- Use a tracked service, insured for the full value of the knife. Until the knife reaches me, it travels at your risk.
- From outside the EU, mark the parcel as a returned good to its maker, so that no Danish import charges apply. I will send you the details to use.
What is refunded
- The price of the knife.
- The original shipping, up to the cost of the standard option at checkout.
- Import duties, taxes or carrier fees you paid on delivery are charged by your country or carrier, not by MK-Knives, so I cannot refund them. You may be able to reclaim them from the carrier or customs when the knife is exported again.
Refunds go back to the original payment method. Your bank or card provider may take a few extra days to show it.
5. Damaged, faulty or not as agreed
If a knife arrives damaged, is faulty or is not what we agreed, I will put it right, and I pay the return shipping.
Please email info@mk-knives.com as soon as you can, with your order number, a short description and photos. If it was damaged in transport, keep the box and packaging, as the carrier may ask for them. Depending on the case, I will repair the knife, replace it where possible, reduce the price or refund you. As every knife is one of a kind, an identical replacement is not always possible.
You have a 2-year legal right to complain about faults, counted from delivery. This applies to finished knives and custom commissions alike, and nothing in this policy limits it.
What is not a fault
- Natural variation in wood, horn, mammoth and other natural materials: colour, grain, pattern and small inclusions.
- Variation in Damascus pattern and forged finish, which makes each knife unique.
- Patina, discolouration or rust on carbon steel. This is normal and is prevented by washing by hand and drying straight away.
- Damage from misuse: the dishwasher, cutting bone or frozen food, twisting, dropping, wrong sharpening or alterations.
6. International orders
Outside the EU, import duties, taxes and carrier fees are set by your country and paid by you on delivery. They are not part of the price you pay to MK-Knives. Please check your local rules, including any rules on importing knives, before you order.
If you refuse to pay these charges, or a parcel is returned because it was not collected or the address was wrong, I refund the knife minus the shipping both ways and any charges I have to pay.
7. Exchanges
As every knife is one of a kind, I cannot exchange it for an identical one. Return the knife as described above and order the one you would like instead.
